Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
