Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
